Maeum Ties

Okokume’s work is a reflection of her inner evolution, shaped by years of absorbing and connecting with diverse cultures. Particularly, her long-standing connection to Korean culture has richly inspired her artistic practice. Having first visited Korea eight years ago, Okokume found herself deeply moved by the country’s vibrant traditions, its harmonious coexistence of historical and modern influences, and the intricate beauty of materials such as hanji paper. This residency has provided her a space to amplify these inspirations, leading her to create work that blends serene color palettes and textures rooted in Korean heritage.

Through this experience, Okokume has explored themes of emotional isolation, introspection, and human interconnectedness. Her art creates an intimate world where muted female figures radiate bonds of love, strength, and care. With facial details intentionally absent, her work invites viewers to project their own emotions and engage in a shared reflective experience.

The residency will culminate in Okokume’s first solo exhibition in Korea, Maeum Ties, set to open on December 13th at ARTIVIST’s pop-up space. The title of the exhibition, Maeum Ties, draws inspiration from the Korean word maeum (마음), which is often translated as “mind” or “heart.” Deeply embedded in Korean culture, maeum represents the interwoven nature of body and mind, emotion and reason. Unlike the dichotomy often seen in Western philosophy, Korean thought embraces maeum as a harmonious union, where both reason and emotion are equally integral to human existence.
